Abstract

The present work was conducted to study the interaction between schistosoma mansoni infection and type 1 diabetes mellitus induced in mice. The present experiment used 40 female Swiss albino mice weight about 20±2 g, they were divided into 4 groups with 10 mice in each one.
Results : Our work included 6 laboratory tests: blood glucose determination, egg excretion assessment, worm recovery and perfusion, oogram, quantitative ova count, and histopathological examinations.
Blood glucose levels : High blood glucose levels were noticed in the groups injected with STZ (either infected with S. mansoni or uninfected). Also, infection with S. mansoni before injection with STZ significantly reduced the elevation in levels of the blood glucose. Egg excretion assessment : Intensity of eggs in faeces were significantly higher in mice of infected group injected with citrate buffer only than in the infected group of mice injected with STZ at the 14thand 21st days after injection. Worm recovery and perfusion: The study showed that there is no difference in the number of worms recovered from the two groups of infected mice. Oogram: It was conducted to study the different developmental stages of eggs, and the present work cleared that the percentage of mature eggs was higher in the group of infected mice injected with citrate buffer while the percentage of immature and dead eggs was higher in the group of infected mice injected with STZ. Quantitative ova count: This work showed that there is no significant difference in the egg load of both intestinal and hepatic tissues between the infected mice group injected with STZ and that injected with citrate buffer only. Histopathological examinations : Histopathological sections of the infected nondiabetic mice showed some tissue changes in the intestine, liver, pancreas and spleen. These changes were mainly in the form of granulomas around the eggs of S. mansoni. Also, the fibrous connective tissue formed whorls which encircled the egg granuloma. It is well known that the principal pathological lesion in schistosomiasis is the host granulomatous response to the parasite eggs trapped in the different organs especially the liver which has been shown to be an immunologic reaction of the cell-mediated type. This finding is supported by previous reports which suggested that infection with S. mansoni can protect against type 1 DM.
