Abstract

Cervical carcinoma is one of the main gynecological malignancies of women. Both primary prevention and early detection can lead to its prevention. Visual inspection with acetic acid is useful in low resource settings because it may be more cost effective than cytology programs applied in developed countries. Aim : The aim of this study is to compare the performance of Visual inspection with acetic acid test (VIA test) with and without the revised criteria in early detection of cervical precancerous changes in low resource settings like Egypt. Patients and methods : This cross sectional study was carried out during the period from June 2014 to January 2016 in the Early Cancer Detection Unit, Obstetrics and Gynecology department, Mansoura University Hospital. A total number of 500 patient aged from 17 to 64 years were recruited from the Gynecology Outpatient Clinic. Oral informed consent was obtained from each participant for examination while written consent was taken before any intervention. Participants included : every woman coming to early cancer detection unit, patients complaining of post coital bleeding and contact bleeding and patients complaining of recurrent and resistant abnormal vaginal discharge despite treatment for different types of vaginal infections .
