Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using task-based mobile learning to develop secondary stage students’ EFL reading skills. Participants of the study were two classes of second year female students at Emam Nasef secondary school for girls who were divided into two groups, one experimental and one control. Instruments of the study were a reading skills questionnaire and an android mobile learning pre-post reading test. Validity and reliability of the instruments were calculated and found to be relatively reasonable, then the pre-test was administered to both the experimental and the control groups. Homogeneity was established between the two groups. After that, the experimental group was taught based on the proposed task-based mobile learning (KO-SU mobile learning) and the control group received regular instruction. A post-test was administered to both groups after the program has been applied. A t-test was used to compare the mean scores of students on the pre-and the post reading skills test. Eta Square was also used to determine the effect size of the treatment program. Results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in reading skills. This indicated that the treatment program had a good impact on developing EFL reading skills of the participating students. Therefore, it is concluded that using task-based mobile learning is effective in developing EFL reading skills for secondary stage students.
