Abstract

Nurses’ Professional identity influences work performance and organizational commitment, nurses’ who are identified and internalized with the profession values are expected to perform well and seeking professional development and committed to their organization. Professional identity and organizational commitment are responsible, to a large extent, for peoples’ work related behavior. While Professional identity influences organizational commitment, the outcomes of both are of crucial importance to organizations and can be tangible or intangible.
The aim of this study is to assess the Professional identity and organizational commitment among nurses through: determining the level of Professional identity Professional identity among nurses, assessing the level of organizational commitment among nurses, and finding out the relationship between Professional identity and organizational commitment among nurses’.
A descriptive, correlational design were used. The study was conducted at Arab contractors medical center, the study sample was included 140 nurses. Data for this study was collected by using two tools namely; Professional identity questionnaire sheet and organizational commitment scale.
Professional identity questionnaire sheet: (Appendix I)
It consisted of two parts:
• First part:
• Demographic data of the study subject such as work setting, age, gender, marital status, years of experience, qualifications and attending training courses.
• Second part:
 It aimed to determine level of professional identity among nurses. It developed by Kabeel (2004) and modified by the researcher. It consists of 56 items grouped under 3 main dimensions as follows: professional image, assertiveness, and self-responsibility.
Organizational commitment scale: (Appendix II)
It aimed to assess organizational commitment level among nurses. It was developed by Kassem (2007), and modified by the researcher. The scale includes 45 items classified under eight main domains as follow: feeling of experience, identification, equity, investment, trust, resistance, compliance, and participation.
The main findings of the current study:
1. The majority of studied nurses had high professional identity level and the professional image had the highest mean score of professional identity.
2. The majority of nurses had high organizational commitment level and the participation domain had the highest mean score of organizational commitment.
3. There are statistically significant relations between total professional identity and years of experience.
4. There are statistically significant relations between total organizational commitment and age and years of experience.
5. There are highly statistically significant, positive correlation between total professional identity and total organizational commitment.
Based on the results of this study, it was recommended that:
1. The nursing administration allowing nurses to share in decision making of the organization.
2. The seniors motivating nurses to be more assertive.
3. Further studies are suggested:
A- Factors influencing professional identity.
B- Organizational commitment and turnover intention among nurses’.
