Abstract Peripheral nerve injury with wide gap leads to partial or complete loss of nerve function. The aim of the present work is to study the regeneration of sciatic nerve after its transection and to assess the possible role of human amniotic membrane in enhancement of nerve regeneration in male albino rats. Forty-two adult male albino rats (weighted 200-250g) were used. They were divided into 3 groups, group I, consisted of six rats which were subjected to sham operation on the right sciatic nerve. group II, consisted of 18 rats, which were subjected to right sciatic nerve transection. group III, consisted of 18 rats, which were subjected to right sciatic nerve transection then the amniotic membrane wrapping. At the end of the experiment, animals from each group were sacrificed, dissected and sciatic nerve was extracted to be examined by light microscopy. In conclusion; the use of the amniotic membrane graft to overcome nerve gaps in the nerve transection gave much better results than the natural healing after nerve transection and epineureal suturing. |
