Abstract Introduction : Schistosomiasis is considered a major health hazard to human. Praziquantel is the mainstay chemotherapeutic measure for it, but the appearance of low efficacy and drug resistant cases necessitates the search for novel natural or synthetic alternatives. Aim of the study : we conducted this study as a new step in the field of novel anti-schistosomal drugs research, in a trial to evaluate the role of ART, (ω-3) PUFAs and their combined protocol as therapeutic measures for infection- or combating agents against re-infection- with S. mansoni (CD strain). Plan of the work: The experiment was conducted on female BALB/C mice in the experimental animal unit of MERC. Mice were randomly allocated into 9 groups and subgroups Results : Best therapeutic effect was noticed in mice received combined regimen of ART and (ω-3) PUFAs, with either baseline or challenge infection, and produced excellent protective effects in all tested parameters. Summary : ART especially when combined with (ω-3) PUFAs, verified its prospective schistosomicidal features, even with increasing the burden or extending the duration of experimental S. mansoni (CD strain) infection, allowing the development of resistance against re-infection. |
