Abstract

Breast cancer is a major concern and one of the leading causes of cancer related death worldwide. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Egypt. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of PARP1 protein expression in breast cancer in Egyptian women. The material of this constituted of archival paraffin blocks of 105 specimens of breast carcinoma, for which immunohistochemical studies were done to assess cytoplasmic and nucleocytoplasmic expression of PARP1. Clinical, laboratory, radiological, pathological, treatment and follow up data were collected from medical records. All data were analyzed using a personal computer with (SPSS) version 22 program. High expression of nuclear PARP1 was evident in 54.3% of cases and these cases were more likely to be ER negative, associated with positive lymph nodes, of TNBC phenotype and less likely to show extra-capsular extension. In TNBC phenotype, nuclear PARP1 expression was statistically significantly correlated to pathological subtype and pathological lymph node status. Cytoplasmic expression of PARP1 was evident in 20% of cases and is statistically significantly correlated to primary tumor size (pT). In TNBC phenotype, cytoplasmic PARP1 expression is statistically significantly correlated to age at diagnosis, type of surgery, pathological subtype and pathological grade.
