Abstract

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease with variable biological and
clinical characteristics. It is one of the most common malignancies affecting
females. Nm23 gene plays a major role in metastasis suppression of breast
cancer and its mechanism of action may involve down regulation of genes
associated with motility and angiogenesis by interacting with many proteins
involved in cellular signal transduction in angiogenesis and tumorigenesis.
The aim of the present work was to study the expression Nm23 &
CD133 in breast cancer and correlated them with other clinically and
pathologically proved prognostic indicators including patient’s age,
histopathlogical type, tumor grading, tumor size, nodal status, TNM stage,
and molecular type .
Paraffin blocks from 110 cases of primary breast cancer were
collected and subjected to routine hematoxylin and eosin staining method to
confirm their histopathological type & grade. They were also subjected to
immunohistochemical evaluation for Nm23 and CD133. The studied breast
carcinoma cases were divided in to three groups: IC-NST group, ILC group
and ST group.
All patients were females Forty seven cases (43%) were 50 years old or
less, while 63 cases (57%) were older than 50 years.
IC- NST group were 70 cases, ILC group were 20 cases included 17
cases classic, one case pleomorphic, one cases alveolar with one case mixed.
Special types group were 20 cases included two cases of tubular carcinoma,
five cases of mucoid carcinoma, six cases of medullary carcinom, three cases
