Abstract

The observed morphological deformities in response to oral administration of therapeutic and double therapeutic doses of oxfendazole during different period of gestation evoked a non-significant foetal resorption, a significant decrease in the mean values foetal body weight and foetal crown- rump. The most frequently encountered discernible visceral malformations in the foeti obtained from dams orally administered therapeutic and double therapeutic doses of the drug were thickening of the ventricular wall of the heart and slight unilateral or bilateral widening of the renal pelvis. Under the influence of the drug administered with both therapeutic and double therapeutic doses to pregnant rabbits during different periods of gestation, the results obtained showed that, there were absence or incomplete of ossification of xiphistrenebrae, strenebrae , metacarpal and metatarsal bones and phalanges. The biochemical analysis of serum of clinically healthy mature female rabbits was carried out to estimate liver function test (ALT and AST) and kidney function test (urea and creatinine). The obtained results showed that both therapeutic and double therapeutic doses of oxfendazole induced an impairment of liver function which represented by a significant increase in serum transferases (ALT and AST). In the same ground, oral administration of oxfendazole to the pregnant dams induced a significant increase in the levels of urea and creatinine in their serum by therapeutic and double therapeutic doses. The recorded results regarding the histopathological study in this work revealed that, the given oxfendazole at therapeutic and double therapeutic doses to pregnant rabbits at different days of gestation period showed different alterations in the liver and kidney of dams and their foeti, and some changes in placenta of the treated Dams.
