Abstract

Background: The prevalence of esophageal varices (OV) in newly diagnosed cirrhotic patients is approximately 60-80% and the 1-year rate of first variceal bleeding is approximately 5% for small esophageal varices & 15% for large esophageal varices. Aim of the Study: To assess the relation between MELD score and grades of esophageal varices (OV) in patients with liver cirrhosis. Patients and Methods: This study included 60 patients with liver cirrhosis admitted at Damietta cardiology & gastrointestinal center in the period from February 2014 to July 2014. Results: The current study showed that MELD score could be used as a noninvasive predictor of esophageal varices with sensitivity 92.5% and specificity 85%.Also could be used in differentiating grades I,II from grades III,IV with sensitivity 55% and specificity 90%. Conclusion: MELD score managed to offer valuable information regarding the diagnosis and grades of oesophageal varices.
