Abstract Many secondary school students face serious difficulties to express themselves in English. Their poor mastery of the necessary EFL speaking skills needs to be addressed to help them overcome these problems. This was confirmed through a pilot study conducted by the researcher where a sample of first year secondary school students were interviewed in the first semester of the school year 2015 The researcher also observed that the students had a high level of speaking anxiety. The present study examined the effect of training first year secondary school students on using meaning negotiation strategy instruction to enhance their EFL speaking proficiency. The treatment recommended practicing speaking through activities of communicative value in a natural context. In addition, this study traced the effect of instructing students in meaning negotiation strategies on reducing their EFL speaking anxiety. The study addressed the following main question:What is the effect of meaning. negotiation strategies on first year secondary school students’ speaking proficiency and speaking anxiety reduction?.
