Abstract The internet is a massive global system of interconnected computer networks used to link billions of devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business and governmental networks of local to global scope. The internet has become one of the most important academic and recreational tools for adolescents and adults. It provides an easy and immediate way for people to explor information and communicate with other people over the world. The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s with both private and United States military research into robust, fault tolerant, and distributed computer networks. The commercialization of what was by then an international network in the mid-1990s resulted in its popularization and incorporation into virtually every aspect of modern human life Internet addiction was originally proposed as a disorder by Goldberg in 1995.It was first described as including numerous symptoms that are similar to the criteria for addictive disorders. These include (a) tolerance (i.e., the need to spend increasing amounts of time using the Internet and withdrawal symptoms such as irritability and tension),(b preoccupation,(c)inability to cut back, and(d)negative consequences for private, social, and professional life. In several studies, “Internet addiction” seems to be associated with depression (Ha et al.,2007; Ni et al., 2009),anxiety (Ni et al.,2009),social phobia (Ko et al.,2009a),loneliness (Özcan and Buzlu, 2007),low selfesteem (Ko et al., 2005),hostility (Yen et al., 2008), substance use ( Ko et al., 2006) and harmful alcohol use (Yen et al., 2009 2009a). The aim of this study is to assess pattern of the internet use among medical students of Tanta University and if associated with internet addiction or not and to evaluate the personality and associated psychiatric disorders with students of internet addiction. |
