Abstract Gestational diabetes is carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity with first recognition during pregnancy.The health needs of gestational diabetes mellitus include nutritional counseling, dietary intervention and proper medical control.The aim of the study: was to evaluate the health needs of gestational diabetic women at antenatal clinic of Suez Canal University Hospital Design:A descri ptive study design was adapted .Sample: urposive, non- probability sampling was used in this study to recruit 180 pregnant women with gestational diabetes in 20 weeks and more without chronic diseases or acute diseases.Data collection tool:semi-structured interviewing questionnaire that included women’s health condition, women’s practical knowledge about nutrition, exercise, prevention care, in addition to societal and cultural barrier to seek health care.Results: More than three quarter of the studied women had excessive thirst as signs of hyperglycemia and excessive urination. The total score of women’s practical knowledge was unsatisfactory in nearly three quarter of the sample.The nature roles of women in society were mentioned as barriers against seeking healthcare in more than one third of the sample Conclusion:high frequency of women understudy had unfulfilled health needs presented by poor practical knowledge about gestational diabetes,presence of signs and symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.Recommend ations: provide counseling and education for women this gestational diabetes and plan to overcome the barriers that prevent women to fulfill their health needs and further researches should be conducted to overcome unfulfilled health needs. |
