Abstract
The present study was carried out to demonstrate the effect of some NSAIDs on male fertility of albino male rats. Ninety five mature male and 30 mature female rats weighing from 170- 180 gm. each, of 4–5 months of age were employed for this study. Male rats were randomly classified into 5 groups as follows. The 1st group (20 rats) were kept as control group given saline sol i.m at a dose of 0.3 ml for 7 successive days. The second group (20 rats) were injected i.m daily for 7 successive days with meloxicam at a dose of 0.13 mg /100 gm. b.wt., whereas, the third group (20 rats) were i.m injected with piroxicam (0.18 mg/100 gm b.wt.) for 7 successive days. The 4th and 5th groups (10 rats) were given double therapeutic doses of the test drug respectively for the same period.
At the end of the first, 15th , 30th and 60th days post drugs administration, blood samples were collected from 5 rats after scarification in centrifuge tubes for serum preparation for estimation of serum FSH, LH, prolactin, total and free testosterone, serum ALP and GGT activity. After collection of blood, rats were dissected out and their testicles, seminal vesicles, and prostate glands were taken and weighed for calculating sex organs index weight. Then they were put in jars containing 10% formol saline solution to be used for histopathological study.
