Abstract

Nursing staff are an integral component of the health care delivery system where health care setting are risk environment by nature, nurses face occupational health hazards on a daily basis which may be categorized into biological, physical, environmental, psychosocial and chemical hazards. Aim: This study was conducted to assess the most common type of occupational hazards facing nursing staff at Tanta University Emergency Hospital. Method: The study was conducted at Tanta University Emergency Hospital. Subjects: consisted of all available nursing staff (512) at the previoussetting. Tool, data were collected using occupational hazards questionnaire, which consisted of two parts, Part (1): nurses’ personal characteristics and Part (2): Questionnaire regarding common occupational hazards facing nurses consisted of (120) items. Results: Most of nursing staff had good knowledge and moderate incidence of occupational hazards, Mechanical hazards ranked the first and biological hazards ranked the least incidence of common hazards at clinical area. There were high statistical significant positive correlation between total nursing staff knowledge and incidence of occupational hazards at (p<0.0001).Conclusion:Nursing staff at Tanta University Emergency Hospital regularly encountered a variety of occupational hazards which may be categorized into biological, physical, mechanical, psychological and chemical hazards. Assessment of most common types of occupational hazards and level of knowledge regarding these occupational hazards among nursing staff are very important to act on to develop safe working environment that foster commitment to the organizational goal to provide high quality of nursing care. Recommendation: Increase number of nursing staff, in- service training programme on occupational hazards to improve their knowledge and practice to decrease incidence of hazards and nurse manager must ensure availability of personal protective equipments.
