Abstract

Solute-solvent interactions Solutions are homogenous liquid mixtures consisting of solute and solvent in variable ratios. In solution, the solute is dispersed uniformly throughout the solvent. Solvent is a
pure liquid or it may be a mixture of two or more liquids. The forces of interaction between solvent and solute led to the century old principle that “like dissolves like Rather than the “like dissolve like” rule, it is the intermolecular interactions, between solvent and solute molecules, which determine the mutual solubility. Compound A dissolves in a solvent B only when the intermolecular forces of attraction FAA and FBB for the
pure components can be overcome by the forces FAB in solution [1 On the basis of the types of forces that may be dominant in solute-solvent interactions we discuss the classification of solvents.
