Abstract Introduction: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has become the main treatment for large or multiple kidney stones, stag horn stones, and cases of failed shock wave lithotripsy. It also can be used to treat smaller sized stones with miniaturized instruments. Aims: To compare the efficacy and safety of spinal anesthesia vs general anesthesia in percutaneous nephrolithotomy surgery. Methodology: After approval of the research ethical committee of anesthesia and intensive care department in Ain Shams University and Nasr City Health Insurance Hospital. This study was conducted in Nasr City Health Insurance Hospital on 40 patients who were scheduled for PCNL. Written informed consents were provided from patients. Results: 40 patients undergoing PCNL will be randomized in two groups; 20 in group (SA) (Spinal anesthesia), and 20 in group (GA) (General anesthesia). Conclusion: Considering postoperative pain, duration of operation, length of hospital stay and complications, spinal anesthesia is as safe and effective as general anesthesia in PCNL. |
