Abstract

Background: Cesarean section is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in obstetrics. Recent decades have seen a major rise in overall caesarean section rates worldwide , and in some parts of the world the rate of cesarean section reaches 40.5 % e.g. in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Aims: This study aims to: Evaluate the use versus nonuse of routine urethral catheterization during elective cesarean section and its effect on incidence of urinary tract infection. Establish the patient welfare and evaluate the overall satisfaction score of the patient with the whole transurethral catheterization experience.
Methodology: The study was conducted at Ain Shams Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study was conducted starting from June 2016. Randomized controlled trial.
Results: Total of (210) gravid women were included in this study after taking their consent for this clinical trial after full explanation of the trial. Two hundred and ten hemodynamically stable women (105 assigned to each group) without any medical or surgical complication undergoing elective caesarean section were randomly selected by the use of table of random numbers and allocated to two groups:
group A: Catheterized preoperatively and for 12 hours postoperatively (C).
group B: Non Catheterized (NC).
Conclusion: Compared with routine catheterization, non-placement of an indwelling urinary catheter is associated with a reduced incidence of UTI, less discomfort at first voiding, less time until first ambulation. Nonuse of an indwelling urinary catheter during cesarean section was not associated with urinary retention, intraoperative difficulties or postoperative complications.
Recommendations: Nonuse of routine transurethral catheterization during elective cesarean section is strongly recommended for its effects on decreasing the incidence of urinary tract infection.
