Abstract

Open heart surgeries are used to treat many of cardiac problems such as coronary
artery disease and valvular heart disease, and repair congenital or acquired heart. OHS is
considered major surgery and needs special preparation and standardized multidisciplinary
care throughout all perioperative phases. The delivery of high quality health care requires
inter-professional teamwork. One of the interventions that can enhance teamwork in the
health care is the development and implementation of the clinical pathways. Clinical
pathways are the multidisciplinary guidelines that display timelines of clinical goals that
patients must be attained it during hospitalization along with the optimal sequence and
timing of interventions by the hospital staff to achieve those goals.
Goals of clinical pathways are focused on achieving optimal efficiency and
improving the quality of heaIthcare. Clinical pathways coordinate the activities of
physicians, nurses, and other staff involved in the providing care for patients with a
particular diagnosis or procedure. Continuous evaluation and follow-up are essential to
ensure good clinical pathways performance.
