Abstract

glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease of multifactorial origin. Though high intraocular pressure (IOP) remains the most important primary and prognostic risk factor for OAG, other IOP independent risk factors may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of OAG that could end with blindness.
In our study we tried to understand socio-demographic factors which may affect visual out come with glaucoma.this study was done on 300 glaucoma patients with visual impairment via questionnaire and we found that age, illitracity, onset of the disease and economic burden for treatment may affect visual out come. So we need an overwhelming understanding of this risk factors and we need other studies for better public and medical awareness. As treatment of glaucoma requires consideration of all potential risk factors, which may provide the possibility of halting progression of glaucomatous field damage.
Recommendations:
• This study implicated a need for assessment for patients newly diagnosed with glaucoma for risk factors and regular follow up of these patients.
• This research necessitates the need for prevention and control strategies of avoidable visual impairment and blindness among glaucoma patients in Egypt.
• Enhancing the role of rehabilitation to patients with visual impairment and blindness including social and economic support.
• Improve level of awareness glaucoma patients through health education especially for at-risk patients.
