Abstract

Dry eye syndrome is a common complication following laser corneal refractive surgery. Though it is a frequent complication, most of the patients do not suffer from severe dry eye following the procedure.

In this study, we evaluated the incidence and severity of dry eye after LASIK and after surface ablation.
The study was conducted on 40 eyes of 20 patients, twenty eyes of them underwent LASIK and the other 20 underwent surface ablation. Tear film was assessed by TBUT (which measures tear film stability) and Schirmer II test ( which measures tear film secretion) , preoperative then 1 week , 1 month and 3 months postoperative.
Our results showed that tear film is affected in both procedures, but it was affected more in LASIK than in surface ablation throughout all the postoperative measurements in comparison to the preoperative values.
Patients started to regain their preoperative values as time passed throughout the follow up. We recommend performing the study on a larger scale and longer follow up to add to the data obtained.
