Abstract

Children are our investment in tomorrow’s society. Their health and the way in
which we nurture them through adolescence into adulthood will affect the prosperity and
stability of countries over the coming decades. The nutritional status of children is directly
related to their health condition and both in turn are key determinants of the human and
social development of communities around the world. Improvement of nutrition and health
increase the chances of child survival and is a precondition for economic development.
This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of preparatory school students in
Lattakia city, and to develop a nutritional profile for them.
A descriptive design was carried out in 5 strata containing governmental preparatory
schools in Lattakia governorate representing both urban and rural areas and including 828
students aged 9-15 years in 2012-2013. Using the equal allocation method; one school was
selected randomly from each of the 5 strata’s (governmental outstanding school,
governmental boys urban school, governmental urban girls school, governmental urban
mixed school, and governmental rural mixed school). One class from each of the five
grades in the selected 5 schools was selected randomly yielding a total number of 25
lasses. All students in the selected classes were included except those students with
chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, asthma, or renal diseases).
