Abstract

The main object of this research is to study the behavior of a laterally loaded vertical single pile embedded in reinforced sand slope using numerical analysis. The numerical simulation is based on PLAXIS 3D (2010) Foundation software. The effect of using reinforcement on both soil slope resistance and the lateral structural behavior of vertical pile are investigated. A total number of one hundred and eighty-two computer runs were carried out on a single vertical pile embedded in non-reinforced and reinforced layered dry sand slope. The studied parameters include number of reinforcing layers (N), width of geo-grid reinforcement layer (W/D), length of reinforcement layer (L/D), the depth of the first layer of reinforcement to the ground level (u/D), the vertical spacing between layers (S/D) and different stiffness (EA) of geo-grid reinforcement. The studied parameters also include, the horizontal distance of the pile from the slope crest (b/D), pile material, slope inclination angle (θ), the free portion of pile (e/D) and the relative density of sand (Rd). The lateral behavior of pile on reinforced slope was compared to that of similar pile in non-reinforced slope.
