Abstract

Objective: The present study was designed to evaluate the response of regenerating rat liver after 70% partial hepatectomy to the effect of CCl4 toxicity early and late in the course of regeneration process. Material and method: Sixty adult male albino rats were divided into five groups. group I; undergone sham operation. group II; 10 rats undergone sham operation, rats were given CCl4. group III; 20 rats undergone 70% partial hepatectomy operation. group IV; 10 rats undergone 70% partial hepatectomy operation. Then, CCl4 was given 3 days after partial hepatectomy group IV; 10 rats undergone 70% partial hepatectomy operation. Then, CCl4 was given four weeks after partial hepatectomy. Liver sections were stained by Hematoxylin and eosin stain, Masson’s Trichrome stain, Immunohistochemical stain for alpha fetoprotein and Toluidine blue staining for semithin sections and transmission electron microscopic study. Result: Early regenerating liver has better tolerance to ccl4 toxicity than late regenerating liver. Conclusion: Partial hepatectomy leads to protection against the hepatotoxic and lethal effects of CCl4.
