Abstract

A broad spectrum of pathologic lesions can occur in the renal sinus. Therefore, the diagnosis of renal sinus lesions relies on a multimodality imaging approach including excretory urography, US, CT, MR imaging, and angiography. With modern computed tomography (CT) the diagnosis of most renal sinus lesions is usually straightforward and accurate. The major question to be answered is whether the lesion represents a surgical or non-surgical type or, in some cases, if follow-up studies are necessary. This evaluation usually can be accomplished if a high-quality examination is performed, if the clinical history of the patient is kept in mind, if conditions that mimic a renal neoplasm are considered and excluded, and if there is an awareness of the potential pitfalls and limitations of CT imaging. This study was carried out in Mansoura University, at Urology and Nephrology center, Radiology Department, on 40 cases of various pathologic conditions that definitely affect the renal sinus. Sixteen cases were non tumorous renal sinus lesions and twenty four cases were tumorous. The sixteen cases of non tumorous lesion involving five cases of renal sinus cysts (31.25%), four vascular lesions (25%), and two cases of hematoma (12.5%), one case was renal abscess (6.25%), two cases were renal lipomatosis (12.5%) and two cases were xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) (12.5%).
