Abstract

Introduction: World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 18 million women perceive their menstrual bleeding as well as health problems especially (PMS), many recent studies results elaborate that cinnamon as a herbal treatment, its contain cinnamaldehyde that have many indications, it used as a pain killer and reduces the severity of menstrual pain, also consider the most safe and non-pharmacological treatment for PMS and dysmenorrheal pain in young girls The aim of this study was to assess the effect of cinnamon on premenstrual syndrome among adolescent girls. Methods: A quasi-experimental research design, purposive sample was utilized to conduct this study on 150 students attended to the nursing school of Mansoura university from September 2012 to May 2013 that one arm intervention group, data were collected using three tools; the 1st tool was an structured questionnaire sheet to assess socio-demographic characteristics, menstrual history and assessment of pre-menstrual syndrome symptoms of the students, the 2nd tool was follow up card (Dairy) to assess the effect of cinnamon after interventions and the third tool was satisfaction scale for measuring the level of students satisfaction. Results: Approximately three quarters of young nursing school students were experienced premenstrual syndrome signs and symptoms; around half of the students had moderate physical, psychological and behaviors symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Around three quarter of the students were satisfied from the effect of cinnamon while the minority 21% was dissatisfied. Conclusion: After intervention by using cinnamon packet supplementation, there were highly significant positive effect of reduction the degree of severity of PMS signs and symptoms among the study group. Recommendation: Raising the awareness of young girls about the safety and efficacy of cinnamon.
