Abstract

This research aims at examining the factors that have an impact on the loan granting decision in the Egyptian’s banking sector. Using on actual data obtained from 663 cases for individuals and corporate loan applicants after excluding abnormal values, the results showed that there was a significant correlation between the ability to repay, collateral, age, education, experience, income, reputation and the level of risks -as independent variables- and the loan amount; the loan term and the loan granting decision as dependent variables. In addition, the results of multiple regression analysis showed that the main independent variables that have an effect on the “loan amount” in the overall sample according to their order are: Collateral, Income and the level of risks. Furthermore, the main independent variables that have an effect on the “loan term” as reported in the study model for the corporate sample are: collateral, income and reputation, but the decision to grant the loan was found to be influenced by the level of risks, reputation, experience and ability to repay. Lastly, the results of logistic regression showed that there was no difference between individual and company borrowers regarding the effect of income on the loan amount, the effect of level of risk on the loan term and the effect of the ability to repay on the loan granting decision. In the light of these results the researcher suggested some recommendations that can be followed to rationalize the decision of granting loans in the Egyptian banks.
