Abstract

Persistent auditory hallucinations produce negative adverse effects, including heightened anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, homicide, suicide, and affect the quality of patients’ lives. This study aimed to investigate the effects of auditory hallucinations management program on quality of life for schizophrenic patients. A quasi-experimental research design pre and post-tested (one week after and 2 months after program), was conducted at the inpatient wards of El-Maamoura hospital for Psychiatric Medicine in Alexandria. The instruments used for data collection were Socio-demographic and Clinical Data Structured Interview Schedule, characteristics of Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale, Schizophrenia Quality Of Life Scale, Costello–Comrey Anxiety Scales, and Calgary depression scale for schizophrenia. The subjects of this study comprised 100 hospitalized schizophrenic patients. The subjects comprised two groups with 50 in the study group and 50 in the control group. Patients in both groups received their psychotropic medications, but only those in the study group received auditory hallucinations management program sessions, two sessions per week for each group, 90 minutes each for ten sessions. The study results reveal that that the mean scores of auditory hallucinations scale tended to decreased compared to pre program in the study group and slightly decrease in the control group at post-test, there were strong significant changes between the study and the control group. Patients receiving the auditory hallucination management program had improved their quality of life from poor to good level than those in the control group. There were a significant positive correlation between total schizophrenia quality of life and severity of auditory hallucinations.
