Abstract

The current issue of the Egyptian geotechnical design code is still based on the traditional global safety factor design (GSFD) approach and working stress design (WSD) method. While, the limit design (LSD) method has been the basic design method for the Egyptian Code of Concrete Structures, and Steel Buildings’ design code. Currently, the geotechnical engineering professionals in Egypt are preparing the new geotechnical code. They try to transit from WSD to LSD method to be consistent with the other codes of practice in Egypt and all over the world. The issuer of the code faces two big challenges. The first challenge is how to brews, persuade and encourage designer and practice engineers to be confident when they use the method. LSD method with its different design approaches includes partial safety factors in the design process. however WSD method has only one global safety factor. So that, the second challenge is how to choose and evaluate the partial safety factors in geotechnical applications. This research work has tried to overcome the previous two challenges and submit a help to new Egyptian geotechnical code. This study is carried out by manual calculations and computer program (PLAXIS). In general, this study was applied on some geotechnical applications and emphases on bearing capacity under shallow foundation as well as replaced soil. Comparisons between geotechnical LSD approaches (Euro code 7, AASHTOO, load resistance factors design (LRFD), and National building code of Canada NBC 2005). are presented. Advantages of LSD that it is logic, safe, and economic. Up to knowledge of author no accurate quantitative method is suggested to design replaced soil and the author proposed design methodology using LSD method, which is another important advantage of the method.
