Abstract Background: chronic kidney disease has become a global public health problem wherever assessment of nutritional needs for patients undergoing dialysis is a key factor in prevention from malnutrition. This study aimed to assess nutritional needs for patients undergoing hemodialysis. A descriptive design was applied in the current study. The study was conducted at EI-Hussein university hospital in Cairo and at Port Said city governmental hospitals disturbed as following, Port Said general hospital and Port-Fouad general hospital. A convenience samplelOO patients undergoing hemodialysis was included. Three tools were used for data collection; Structured interview questionnaire, Dietary assessment which include Food frequency questionnaire and 24 recall assessment questionnaire, and Nutritional needs assessment questionnaire. Results of the study revealed that, more than three-quarters of them have abnormalities of nutritional parameters and showed that there are significances between socio-demographic variables, dietary habits, and some of the nutritional needs among studied hemodialysis patients and must be taken into consideration in the nutritional assessment. Conclusion: abnormalities of nutritional parameters are over prevalent than expected by analysis of dietary food intake. The current study recommended that, dietetic counseling is very important in HD patients, as well as a reevaluation of the type of dietary protein and energy requirements. |
