Abstract

T
his study was conducted to compare four types of attachments (Ball and Socket, locater, magnet dome shape and flat shape) for single implant retained mandibular complete overdentures using strain gauge analysis.
One clear acrylic model was constructed representing completely edentulous lower ridge. A single implant was placed in the midline region of this model, upon which four identical experimental overdentures were constructed.
The first overdenture was fitted to single implant through a Ball and Socket attachment, while the second was fitted to implant through a locater attachment, the third was fitted to single implant through a Magnetic Dome attachment while the fourth one was fitted to the implant through a Magnetic flat shape attachment.
Two strain gauges were installed in the right and left sides single midline implant. A special loading device (universal testing machine) was used to apply standardized static vertical and oblique loads with a magnitude of 100 N at the right first molar tooth on the occlusal surface of each experimental overdentures.
Microstrain was recorded on each site of the strain gauge during vertical and oblique posterior unilateral loading with enough time elapsed between each loading to allow complete rebound of the resilient structures.
Data was collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed to compare between the four attachment designs.
The results revealed that dome shaped has higher value followed by flat shaped followed by locator followed by ball and difference were statistically significant, post hock test showed significant differences between ball and other groups.
The results obtained showed that greater strain was induced right side (loading) compared to strain induced in left side (non loading) of single midline implant with oblique and vertical loads during unilateral posterior load application with four design abutment.
