Abstract

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive neurological disorders of
motor development in children secondary to lesions or anomalies of
the brain.
The aim of this study is to review the available related literatures
especially recent one to prepare a source contains a review about
cerebral palsy in pediatrics from medical view, the related anaesthetic
problems, role of anesthetist with cerebral palsy in pediatrics and the
proper perioperative anaesthetic management of such cases
Clinical picture of CP may vary considerably, from mild
monoplegia with normal mentality to severe spastic quadriplegia with
mental retardation.
The diagnosis of CP is performed by clinical picture and
investigations. Investigations include CT scan, MRI and cranial
ultrasound to identify any lesions or abnormalities in the child’s brain,
EEG if the child has seizures, and laboratory tests.
Treatment for CP includes, pain relief and other therapies. Pain
relief is performed by medications, physical therapy (e.g. Pulsed
radiofrequency), electrotherapy (TENS), acupuncture and surgical
therapy (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy). The commonly used
medications to treat pain in children and adults with Cp include
anticonvulsants, anticholinergics, anti-spastics, intramuscular
Botulinum neurotoxin, anti-inflammatories.
