Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most often diagnosed cancer worldwide and its incidence is still growing. Despite advances in surgery and chemotherapy, many patients suffer from progression of the disease, while others are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease. Nevertheless, efficient multidrug chemotherapy combined with targeted therapy and resection of metastases leads to significant prolongation of patients’ life. One of the main goals of modern oncology care is to ensure the best possible quality of patients’ life.
Various determinants of QoL in CRC had been investigated and the results mainly shown that physical problems linked to symptoms and surgical procedures, such as bowel problems and stoma are the most common.
The importance of symptoms has been reported in many studies since they affect directly and indirectly QoL in CRC survival. In fact the presence of diarrhea, incontinence, fatigue and pain in addition to having direct effects on QoL influenced the daily activities and hobbies, and interfere with family and social life.
Despite some limitations, this study is useful for a better understanding of QoL of CRC patients when they receive their chemotherapy.
We used the QLQ C29andQLQ C30 questionnaire to assess the quality of life among mCRC patients receiving chemotherapy.
Our results were consistent with many worldwide studies: chemotherapy affects the QOL and it may worsen patients QOL.
We also correlated different scales of the QLQ C30 and QLQ C29 questionnaire to many items like: age, sex, co morbidities, site of tumor and line of treatment.
from this point, it is important that physicians should be more oriented about the effect of chemotherapy on QOL of patients especially in late stages also to deal with physical and emotional changes and discuss these points with patients.
