Abstract There is a growing awareness concerning Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emissions from finishing materials as a major source of pollution in the educational environment ; owing to children sensitivity to pollutants than more adults and the considerable time spent in school. New buildings with their fresh finishing materials are the highest level of VOCs emissions, so new schools will become the focus of attention for our thesis. This thesis approach is to focus on determining the optimum VOCs mitigation procedure that is assumed to be basically based on the natural ventilation as a variable factor. The main thesis aim is to find out to what extent this factor is effective on VOCs mitigation process and if it can be solely depended on or the ventilation factor must be integrated with replacing some finishing materials factor. Throughout the analysis of the Glory International School and the various proposed scenarios, the optimum proposal can be presented with the required changes to mitigate TVOC concentration to go with LEED standard. It can ensure the importance of the natural ventilation to be taken into consideration in the pre-design by the architect to avoid VOCs threats as possible as we can. The final result is introducing a number of recommendations basically for the General Authority for Educational Buildings (GAEB). |
