Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma (BA) is one of the most common chronic lung diseases. There has been a sharp increase in the global prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and financial burden associated with asthma. Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) is the most effective natural drug-free therapy for asthma management. This technique showed a significant improvement in quality of life (QoL) and asthma control. This study aims to assess the impact of BBT on asthma control and quality of life in patients with BA. Subjects & Methods: Quasi-experimental design was conducted. A purposive sample of 90 asthmatic patients from out-patient of chest diseases department, Mansoura university Hospital over a period of 12 months were included. Data were collected using two tools I) ”Assessment Questionnaire Sheet” which include 4 parts: 1) ”Socio demographic data”, 2) ”Clinical Data” 3) ”Assessment Severity of Bronchial Asthma” 4) ”Assessment level of asthma control”. Tool (II) ”Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire”. Two tests were used (pre-test, and post-test) Results revealed that, -40.9% reduction in total rescue medications used in Buteyko group compared with 0.86% in control group, reduction in asthma severity in Buteyko group -33.3% versus +4.5% of the study group, improvement of asthma control 54.6% compared to -6.8% in control group. Improvement of QoL total score 49.2 ± 8.4 to reach 60.4 ± 12.9 post implementing BBT. Conclusion: The Buteyko group shows significant reduction of rescue medications used and asthma severity, improvement of asthma control as well as total quality of life scores than control group. Recommendations: early conduction of BBT for asthmatic patients and establish of BBT clinic in chest departments supplemented with qualified Buteyko practitioners.
