Abstract Aim : This study was aimed to evaluate and compare retention and stability between rigid telescopic and milled bar attachments used to retain implant-supported maxillary overdenture. Materials and Methods : An acrylic resin model of an edentulous maxilla without alveolar undercuts was fabricated and four laboratory implants were inserted in the canine and second premolar areas. Mucosal simulation was fabricated over the model. Maxillary experimental overdenture were constructed over the model and connected to the model with either telescopic (group I) or milled bar attachment (group II). Resistance of overdenture to axial and non-axial (anterior, posterior, and lateral) dislodging forces was measured to represent retention and stability respecitvely. Measurements were made at the beginning of the study (Initial measurement) and after 540 cycles of denture insertion and removal (final measurement). To compare between groups and between time of measurements (initial and final retentive forces dislodging forces), paired samples t-test was used. One-way ANOVA was used to compare dislodging forces. Results: Milled bar recorded the highest intial (P<.001) and final retention (P<.001) during vertical and anterior dislodging force. However; Telescopic attachment was recorded significant higher initial (P<.001) and final retentive forces during posterior (P<.002) and lateral dislodgment (P<.001). Conclusions: The highest vertical and anterior values were recorded with milled bar attachment and the highest lateral and posterior values were recorded with telescopic attachment. |
