Abstract

While there have been many writings on Richard Wilbur’s literary works, insufficient attention has been given to trace the existence of some effective characteristics of the past movements of poetry in his poetic works. This dissertation is an attempt to demonstrate that Wilbur’s poetry enjoys some characteristics which are attributed to the past Classical and Romantic Schools of poetry, and which also play a role of a paramount importance in understanding it. The characteristics of concern here are those of poetry which is based on intellect and elegant, well-selected dictions ; peculiar to the Classical School, and those of poetry which is founded on cherishing nature and resorting to mythology of the past; peculiar to the Romantic Movement. This dissertation is titled “The Classical and Romantic Undercurrents in the Poetry of Richard Wilbur,” and it deals with the poems which are included in Wilbur’s volume New and Collected Poems published in 1988. This dissertation falls into four chapters in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter deals with the intellectual aspects of Wilbur’s poetry, the second focuses on poems dealing with the world of nature, the third is concerned with Wilbur’s use of the mythologies of the past, and the fourth comes to discuss Wilbur’s distinguished poetic wordscapes as manifested in some of his poems.
