Abstract

Assessment of Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Type1 Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) leads to multiple complications which can impact a patient’s quality of life and compliance and may directly result in additional costs to the health care system.
Objective: The objective was to evaluate of the quality of life in children and adolescents with type 1 DM as well as providing recommendations for future studies.
Methods: This cross sectional study was done on 1oo patients with type 1 DM following up at Diabetes Clinic, Pediatric Hospital, Ain Shams University, Egypt (70 girls and 30 males, mean age 12.96 years (range 8–18). Sociodemographic (age, sex, family level of education) and clinical variables (type of insulin therapy, duration of disease, body mass index, serum lipid profile, microalbuminuria, blood pressure and HbA1c) were collected. HRQOL was assessed using the PedsQL™ 3.0 module.
Results: The mean of the total scale score of the patients was 77.58. We found no significant correlation between age and different QOL scales. In this present study, we found higher HRQoL among females (p=0.039). There was no difference found between children and adolescent regarding the QOL scores (p=0.336). There was significant statistical relation between different QOL scales in our study and mother education (p=0.020), last HbA1C % result (p=0.004). There was marked deterioration of QoL with longer duration of the disease (p=0.000) and long term complications (p=0.000).
Conclusion: DM affects the quality of life of the patients mainly through occurrence of long term complications. The study shows some factors to be taken into account to improve HRQOL.
