Abstract Egypt suffers from poor coverage of adequate sanitation systems in rural areas and the majority of the population in Egypt located along the Nile River banks where there is high amount of underground water. Therefore, the continuous direct discharge of untreated wastewater into waterways causes pollution and harm the environment. Therefore, there is a necessity to treat wastewater to meet the standards of the water quality to be discharged to drains or to be suitable for re-use in agricultural purposes. Improving sanitation systems for rural areas rely more on decentralized on-site treatment units and filtration is becoming increasingly important as cost effective solution in wastewater treatment as it requires less land, less capital costs of construction and doesn’t require skilled labors. This thesis reports an investigative study on the performance of the fabric filtration unit using a pre-treated wastewater effluent of a ZECU system located in Zaweyt El-Karadsa WWTP to obtain higher effluent quality for the system. Tests were undertaken during 3 months on a non-woven polyester fabric media then it was coated with membrane to enhance it’s performance to obtain the optimum design parameters such as flux rates and water operational head for the system by testing different flux rates and water heads. Field results have been analysed to optimize the factors affecting the removal process by testing different flux rates and water heads and the optimum flux rate achieved for the non-woven polyester was 32 l/m2/hr at 1.5 meters of water head and removal efficiency was up to 69.78% ,49.01% for TSS and COD respectively with an average passage of the filter media up to 75.35%. and for the non-woven polyester coated with membrane, the optimum flux rate achieved ranged from 29 to 32 l/m2/hr at 1.5 meters of water head and removal efficiency was up to 78.35% ,54.65% for TSS and COD respectively with an average passage of the filter media up to 77.43%. The results showed that the non-woven fabric media is very effective on the physical removal process and it can be used as a filter media in wastewater treatment for small communities. |
