Abstract
Within the last few short years, Nd:YAG laser prostatectomy has joined the surgical approaches to the management of bladder outlet obstruction secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. Since 1992, a multitude of side-firing Nd:YAG laser fibers of variable configuration have been introduced, all primarily intended for use in prostatic surgery.
The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of transurethral laser prostatectomy as a therapeutic modality for BPH. Two laser systems were used in this study, the first system was designated for the noncontact laser mode technique, in which a 100-watt continuous-wave laser machine, Nd:YAG laser of wavelength 1064µm (Laserphotonics, USA) with SMA 905 socket and side-firing laser fibers. The second system was the contact laser system. The design and application of this system (Surgical Laser Technologies, Oaks, PA) allows the prostate tissue to be treated primarily by immediate removal through vaporization.
