Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of Aloe vera gel in the treatment of oral lichen planus compared with placebo. This study is first one which comparing two concentration of Aloe Vera. The present study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of topical aloe vera applied two times a day at concentrations of 70% (Egyptian aloe vera and 90% (Australian aloe vera) in oral lichen planus, compared with placebo. Twenty-one females suffering from erosive oral lichen planus were chosen from those attending Oral Medicine and Periodontology department, Faculty of Dentistry, Mansoura University were included in the study. The first (study) group of patients receiving Aloe vera gel divided in two subgroups: group (I/A): they received aloe vera 70% concentration Include seven patients. group (I/B): they received aloe vera 90% concentration Include seven patients. The second (control) group received placebo Include seven patients. Each patient was instructed to apply the Aloe vera (AV) twice daily by finger/cotton tip application on dry lesion after meals without eating for at least half-hour to obtain better absorption. Objective and subjective evaluations were performed at the start of the study, and base line parameters were recorded. The lesions were re-assessed at the end of the second, fourth, sixth and eighth weeks of treatment.Quantitative measurements of the lesion were calculated from the grid by collecting the number of squares by 1 mm2. The pain was scored by visual analogue scale (VAS). Patients were asked to score their intensity of pain at each visit as follow: (0) no pain, (1) mild pain, (2) moderate pain and (3) sever pain.
