Abstract Agecalculation has become increasingly important in forensic sciences. It considered as the ideal and most accurate method to evaluate the pulp/tooth volume (PTV) ratio. Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) can be used to measure the rate of secondary dentin deposition which is depicted by reduction in the pulp area The objective of the present study was to analyze ratio of the volume of the pulp to the tooth volume of lower canine in Egyptians to form an age estimation method based on the ratio of the pulp/tooth volume. A random selection of 150 sets of 3D cone Beam CT tooth images of were collected and grouped into 5 age groups. DICOM files of selected images were imported in 3D diagnostic and treatment software allowing for segmentation and building 3D models of both pulp and toothto calculate volumes of both pulp and tooth. Linear regression analysis was then performed to establish a correlation between the chronological age and the pulp/tooth volume ratio. The results of the present study showed no statistically significant difference between males and females regarding pulp/tooth volume for different age groups. The formulated equation from linear regression formula that can be used to estimate age. Based on the present findings, it may be concluded that using Cone-beam Computed Tomography 3D images; the ratio of pulp/tooth volume can be calculated, for age estimation based on this ratio. |
