Abstract

The present thesis has analyzed the function of language in Sinclair Lewis’snovel It Can’t Happen Here from a pragmatic perspective. It has focused onthree major pragmatic components that have contributed to highlighting thedominant themes in the work under consideration. The components targeted foranalysis are deixis (Chapter Two), implicatures (Chapter Three), and SpeechActs (Chapter Four). This thesis has shown how Sinclair has selected from thelinguistic options available to him by spotlighting the factors that have governedthese choices of language in the social interactions and situations in It Can’tHappen Here. The effect of these choices upon the readers will be highlighted inthe background of the satirical political strain dominating the novel. The noveldescribes the rise of Berzelius ”Buzz” Windrip, a populist United States Senatorwho was elected to the presidency after promising drastic economic and socialreforms and he also promised a return to patriotism and traditional values. Afterhis election, Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes aplutocratic/totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, in themanner of Adolf Hitler.
