Abstract
Background: Burn scars are known by their tendency to worsen with hypertrophy and contracture causing aesthetic and functional problems. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of low level laser therapy on post burn hypertrophic scar tissue. Patients and methods: A randomized controlled study included 30 children ranged from 2-10 years presenting with post burn hypertrophic scars. They were randomized into two equal groups; group I received He-Ne laser and topical treatment, group II received Ga-As laser and topical treatment. In both groups the lesion was divided into two halves; one half was treated with laser therapy and topical treatment and the other half was treated with topical treatment only. The children were evaluated before and after 3 months of the study by Vancouver scar scale, ultrasonography and laser doppler perfusion imaging. Results: Significant DROP was reported in the studied area compared to the control area for patients in both groups with p values in group I (P=0.003) (P=0.02) and group II (P=0.005) (P=0.0001) for VSS and U/S scores respectively. No Improvement was reported for blood perfusion to the scar in both groups I and II respectively (P=0.73) (P=0.18), no statistical significant was detected when comparing groups indicating same effect of both types of low level laser. Conclusion: Low level laser therapy is an efficient and safe therapeutic modality for post burn hypertrophic scars in children that should be considered as a part of combination therapy for better results.
