Abstract

Aim: To investigate the histopathology of periodontium to experimentally induced furcation perforations in dogs’ primary teeth repaired by Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine. Methodology:Ninety six primary premolars from twelve healthy puppy dogs were used in this study. The study design was a split mouth design. The teeth were divided into two experimental groups (one repaired with MTA and the other with Biodentine), and two control groups where perforations were made but not repaired, one group control to MTA group and the other control to Biodentine group (24 each). Clinical procedures were done under general anesthesia. Coronal pulp chamber was thoroughly cleaned from all debris with water spray and sterile cotton pellets soaked with saline. Then 1.4 mm-diameter perforation was created in the center of the pulp chamber floor of the experimental and control teeth using a sterile round bur. The perforated areas were sealed, in group A with MTA, and in group B with Biodentine. group C and group D weren’t sealed. Final restorations were performed with Intermediate Restorative Material (IRM). Biopsy sections were taken at one, two, and three-month periods where 4 dogs were sacrificed at each period. Data were analyzed to obtain Descriptive statistics and Analytical statistics to test the significance of difference between groups. Results: The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference in degree of inflammation and signs of repair between MTA and Biodentine groups, also there was no significant difference between the three periods of follow up (P>0.05). On the other hand there was a statistically significant difference between MTA group and its control group (P<0.05) and between Biodentine group and its control group (P<0.05).Conclusion: Furcation perforation repair with either MTA or Biodentine had almost the same effect on healing the periodontium, however Biodentine had better handling characteristics and low price compared to MTA.
