Abstract

Objective: To assess the efficiency of laser lithotripsy in management of ureteric stones regarding lithotripsy time, stone clearance, need of ureteric stent and possible complications.
Patients and methods: Between February 2016 and February 2017, a total of 30 patients with ureteric stones, all candidates for Ho: YAG laser lithotripsy were included in this prospective study that was done at the urology department of El-Demerdash hospital, Faculty of medicine, Ain Shams University
Results: 30 procedures were performed in 30 patients. The mean stone size was 1.19±0.17cm and the mean operative time was 65.37±12.60 min. The overall intraoperative complicated cases were 7(23.3%) and the overall postoperative complicated cases were 8(26.7%). The rate of DJ stent insertion was 36.7% and the stone free rate was 86.7%.
Conclusion: Holmium: YAG laser lithotripsy during ureteroscopy appears to be an effective tool to disintegrate all types of ureteric stones with low complication rates and the majority of complications can be managed conservatively .Disintegration of large ureteral stones is time consuming and prolong disintegration and operative time.
