Abstract

The nursing profession relies on a strong basis of several disciplines as a base for practice, nursing as a job reflects a greet meaning for helping individuals, families, groups and communities. Nurses are the main professional component of the ‘front line’ staff in most health systems, and their contribution is recognized as essential to meeting development goals and delivering safe and effective care. The role of nurse as a health educator is deeply entrenched in the growth and development of the profession. The focus by teaching efforts by nurses has not only been on the care of the sick and on promoting the health of well public, but also on educating patients, families and other nurses for professional practice, nurses can achieve the professional goal of providing cost effective, safe and high quality care.
Patients undergoing dialysis have many physical and psychological disorders and the type of dialysis is not of much importance in this regard; therefore, adequate education and information for clients in order to use appropriate methods of adaptation as well as appropriate social relationship, continuing social support and developing health policies seem necessary in order to prevent mental disorders and providing required services and supports for patients.
Today, nurses have an important role to enact as health educators. Nursing staff should be well prepared to enter the profession as health educators, but the nursing staff of the hospitals affiliated to the Ministry of Health in Alexandria; faced several problems and barriers in health education role as : time constraints, shortage of staff, frequent burden, lack of coordination among health team, lack of scientific material and there are multiple difficulties in dealing with patient related to their health status, culture, religion, socialization and hospitalization.
This study aimed to identify patient health education barriers that face nursing staff during applying patient’s teaching in hemodialysis unites. Identifying this barriers, help us to overcome it and it would be beneficial for patient outcome, nursing education and nursing practice at all.
The study was conducted at the hemodialysis units in three hospitals affiliated to the Ministry of Health in Alexandria namely EL-Gomhoria, Shark El-Madinah, El-Homiate hospital, the sample included 70 nurses at the time of data collection in morning and evening shifts. They were all nurses enrolled in hemodialysis units at the previous mention setting and this study also included 336 patients who were underwent in hemodialysis units previously mentioned settings, at the time of data collection. The sample of the study was selected using stratified random sampling technique.
Two tools were developed and used in the study:
Tool I: Nurses Health Education Barriers Structured Interview Schedule (for nursing staff) It includes statements to assess and identify the hindering factors, and difficulties that are encountered by nursing staff enrolled at hemodialysis units during providing patient health education. Tool II: Patients’ health education barriers structured interview schedule for hemodialysis patients. It includes statements to assess the barriers that hinder health education activities as perceived by patients.
