Abstract

Health education plays a significant part in health outcomes and health management. It is an important professional nursing responsibility which depends on individual participation in self care, treatment, diagnosis and rehabilitation. The provision of information, knowledge, self-care skills, and self-efficacy encouragement, in order to produce active participation, results in safer improved care and control of the illness including a better prognosis and outcomes.
Nursing education should prepare nurses to be a professional health educator as well as to ensure effective health education. Therefore the nursing student has a responsibility in providing health information and using it in a proper sequence with population to maintain effectiveness in relation to nursing practice.
It is well known that the learning process is affected by the following factors: intelligence, aptitude, goals, interests, readiness, maturation, self concept, attitudes, values, level of aspiration, learning style and motivation.
Therefore, the issues of motivation of students in education and the impact on academic performance are considered as an important aspect of effective learning. However, a learner’s reaction to education determines the extent to which he or she will go in education.
There are several factors affecting nursing student’s motivation to provide health education. First, the factors regarding nursing students themselves in health education as communication skills, knowledge, experience. Second, the factors regarding clients/patients or families as socio-demographic, characteristics, nature of patient’s illness, compliance for health behaviors. Third, the factors regarding hospital setting and health care team as hospital environment, rules, regulations, facilities and resources, cooperation and assistance of health care team and finally the fourth one is the factors regarding school as system support, appropriate curriculum, proper setting with the development of the needed supplies, reward system and teaching methods.
The study was conducted at the Technical Institutes of Nursing; affiliated to Ministry of Health namely: Lumbrozoo, Gamal Abd El Nasser and Tosson in general nursing department, Alexandria. The subjects of this study consisted of all nursing students, males and females who were enrolled in the second year, at second semester in academic year 2011-2012. The study included 99 nursing students at the three mentioned Technical Institutes of Nursing.
Aims of the study
1- Determine the level of motivation of Technical Institute Nursing students to provide health education.
2- Identify the factors that affect Technical Institute Nursing students’ motivation to provide health education.
Tools of the study:
Two tools were used for data collection in this study.
Tool I: Nursing Student’s Level of Motivation Scale:
This scale was developed by Sundre (2000) to determine Nursing Student’s Level of Motivation. This tool was modified by the researcher for data collection included 16 statements, twelve statements of them are positive and the other four are negative.
Tool II: Factors Affecting Motivation to Provide Health Education questionnaire:
This tool was developed by the researcher after review of related literature. The tool was used to identify the factors affecting nursing students’ motivation to provide health education. It includes 54 statements and questions that are encountered by nursing students in the form of Multiple Choice Questions, Dichonemus and Open Ended Questions.
