ABSTRACT:
Background: Clinical observations indicate that substance use disorders related to emotional problems. Although many studies were conducted about emotional intelligence and addiction, yet this study is considered one of the earliest studies if not the earliest at all to talk about tramadol in particular, regarding it as one of the most prevalent substance of abuse in our Egyptian society.
Objectives: the aim of this study is to assess emotional intelligence among tramadol dependant patients. And determine if any components of emotional intelligence are more affected in those patients. And assess the relationship between emotional intelligence and tramadol dependence with comorbid personality disorders.
Method: The Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT): for assessment of emotional intelligence and it’s different components and subscales; Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Personality Disorders (SCID-II): for assessment of personality disorder among cases
Results: Thirty (30) patients were included in this study and compared with 30 healthy control matched for age and sex. Their age ranges between 18-45 years. Comparing cases and controls as regards The Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) score shows that mean SSEIT total score for controls is significantly higher than cases with significant p value for total score and all subscales (> 0.001), and that the most common personality disorders among tramadol addicts are: borderline, depressive and narcissistic personality disorders respectively
Conclusion: Tramadol addicts tend to score lower than normal individuals in emotional intelligence score with all it’s components. Which might be implicated clinically in the treatment program of these patients
