Abstract

The present study was done on 30 patients attended the radiology Department of Minia University hospital in the period from May 2014 to June 2015.
It included 30 patients who fulfilled the selection criteria & formed the study population.
Aim of the current study was to assess of the role of transthoracic ultrasound in the diagnosis of chest diseases.
All patients were subjected basically to full history taking, full clinical examination, chest x-ray and chest ultrasonographies were done. CT chest was done for selected cases to prove the diagnosis.
In this study , patients were classified into 4 groups based on the final diagnosis.
The first group included 10 patients with pulmonary parenchematous diseases that the US reported sensitivity of 88.8% , specificity of 100%.
The seconed group included 11 patients with pleural diseases that the US reported sensitivity of 100% , specificity of 50% .
The third group included 7 patients with pleuropulmonary diseases that the US reported sensitivity of 100% , specificity of 100%.
The forth group included 2 patients with mediastinal diseases that the US reported sensitivity of 100% , specificity of 100% .
The advantages of transthoracic ultrasound include: the absence of ionizing radiations, easy performance, rapid, accurate, short time of examination , lower cost, bedside availability and high sensitivity in detecting pleural lesions and differentiating them from parenchymal diseases and also it can detect mediastinal masses.
Transthoracic ultrasound has a complementary role to chest x-ray for evaluation of a wide variety of chest diseases. Also used to guide interventional procedures of the chest and pleural space. As it has useful therapeutic role in management of some chest diseases as pleural effusion.
